Comments on homework 2
As a reminder, for Homework #2 (due Monday, Feb 21), you should be able to complete parts A through D. We will cover what is needed to complete E and F in Monday's class.
Just a hint on calculating opportunity cost. Sometimes it seems more difficult than it really is. With linear production possibilities frontiers, it is simple. What follows is how you can solve for the opportunity cost of one pound of spaghetti for the Tivoli tribe:
If you draw the PPF for the Tivoli, you will notice the endpoints are (30 pounds of spaghetti, 0 meatballs) and (50 pounds of meatballs, 0 spaghetti).
If you take the endpoints of the PPF and set them equal, you have an equation where you can solve for one unit of the good.
So for the Tivoli tribe, set up the following equation:
30 spaghetti = 50 meatballs (units are in pounds, I'm dropping that for convenience)
To get the opportunity cost of one pound of spaghetti, you solve the equation by dividing both sides by 30.
(30 spaghetti/30) = (50 meatballs/30)
so
1 spaghetti = (50/30) meatballs. This reduces to (5/3) meatballs or 1.67 meatballs.
Then to get the opportunity cost of one pound of meatballs for the Tivoli, divide both sides by 50:
(30 spaghetti/50) = (50 meatballs/50)
or
3/5 spaghetti = 1 meatball (this is also 0.6 spaghetti = 1 meatball)
(remember, units are in pounds)
So that really solves the first line of the table in B.
You can solve the Frivoli's opportunity cost in a similar manner.
Then compare the opportunity costs. The tribe with the lower opportunity cost producing a good has the "comparative advantage" in that good. (Your answer for D.)
